In Safe Hands: meet The Evangelistas.

The Evangelistas are a loose collaboration of singers, performers and composers all focused on one thing: salvation through the power of song.

Below you’ll see our current collaborators and can read all about their shepherding prowess.

Nick Owen (Vocalist and Writer)

Nick has sung across the UK for many years. His first gig was as a church choir boy when he was paid 3d for rehearsals and 6d for services, followed soon after by the short lived dada-funk band, Gdansk, which briefly lit up the skies in Leeds in those late punk, early new-wave years. In between those heady times he has sung in diverse venues from Aberystwyth to Leeds, and from Nottingham to Wembley via Barrow in Furness. A fan of The Kinks, Divine Comedy and Jacque Brel amongst others, the Shepherds of the Nation project sees him curate a catalogue of much loved songs which perhaps don’t get the exposure they deserve.

Paul Warren (Artist and Illustrator)

Paul Warren enjoys drawing on an iPad and spends a lot of his time doing exactly that.  He draws images of people and refers to his artwork as “Momentism,” or “Expressionist Momentism,”  the drawing of a moment in someone’s day to day existence.  A moment that was there a moment ago and is now gone but there will be another one along in a moment, a little like buses.

Paul’s drawing style is loose and, some would say, illustrative and Paul wouldn’t argue with that description. He adds that much of the source material comes from remembered observation and/or conversation and that the use of line and colour is constantly in an evolutionary state of flux. Humour, subtle or otherwise, is often a feature of the imagery and a couple of his motivational yardsticks are, “laugh and the world laughs with you” and “There’s more to art than meets the eye.”

Janice Owen (Inter-disciplinary Artist)

Janice has developed her creative practice from school day plays, performances and events, including professional touring opera and contemporary dance.

An established writer, and enthusiastic artistic interdisciplinary practitioner, including theatrical sets and costumes, her imaginative memorable designs demonstrate a passion for sensitivity to authenticity, character, elegance, humour, and movement inspired through conversation, life experience and cultural heritage.

A shepherdess by birth, and a milliner’s great granddaughter, Janice has worn many hats in developing The Shepherds of the Nation Project.  In her role of Couturier Consultant, she has fettled, handcrafted and refashioned a priest hat, with love from a pre loved vintage purchase, very much the ‘Queen of Recycling’.

“Art is a language with no barrier.”

Jason Wesley Biggs (Composer, Guitarist and Artist)

The lightning bolt is the defining symbol of Jason Biggs’s artworks. It strikes me…the electrification of the moment seems to be the guiding principle, the energy in the atmosphere. You can almost hear the collages coming into being, the rush of inspiration, the spontaneous movement of the scissoring and ripping and splicing, the addition of paint and ink, the sheer alchemical force. The work kind of arrives through a protean process of emotion, gesture, accident, chance encounter, risk, play, impulse, expression, erasure, assemblage…and then abandoned – or perhaps set free – when the process suggests that this is the moment to stop. It strikes me that each artwork is a kind of self portrait of the artist in the present tense – electrical, imaginative weather. Jason Biggs is a lightning rod and the exhibition is a kind of weather report or autobiography of who he is right now. (Jeff Young)
